Wood Wax Application
Your wooden boards, utensils, and furniture are more than just tools, they are an investment. To keep them looking beautiful and performing at their best, they need deep hydration and a hard-wearing protective barrier.
Our handmade wax is crafted from a precise blend of food-grade mineral oil, pure beeswax, and carnauba wax.
While mineral oil and beeswax provide the essential moisture and "seal," the addition of carnauba wax (the world's hardest natural wax) ensures a more durable, water-resistant finish that lasts longer between applications.
Our wax provides a deep, silky luster that is 100% food-safe and easy to maintain.
Step-by-Step Application Guide
Follow these simple steps to revitalize your wood and protect it for years to come.
1. Preparation
Ensure the wood surface is clean and completely dry. If the board has been recently washed, let it air dry for at least 2-4 hours. For older boards with rough spots, you may wish to lightly sand the surface with 240/320-grit sandpaper for an extra-smooth finish before waxing.
2. Apply the Wax
Using a clean, lint-free cloth or applicator pad, scoop a small amount of wax from the tin. Apply it to the wood in a circular motion, ensuring you cover the entire surface, including the edges and any juice grooves.
3. Let it Soak
Allow the wax to sit on the wood for at least 20 to 30 minutes. This gives the mineral oil time to penetrate deep into the wood while the beeswax and carnauba begin to set on the surface. For very dry or new wood, you may wish to leave the wax overnight.
4. Buff to a Shine
Using a fresh, dry cloth, buff away any excess wax following the direction of the wood grain.
5. Allow time to Cure
Following light buffing the wood may still feel slightly sticky or tacky to the touch. This is normal, the wax will fully harden over the next 24-48 hours. When applied to chopping boards or utensils we recommend allowing 48 hours after buffing before heavy use or washing the wood.
Maintenance Tips
If your wood starts to look dried-out or dull, or if water no longer beads on the surface, it's time to apply a new coat of wax.
For chopping boards or utensils, after use wash with a cloth wet with warm, soapy water. Avoid fully immersing or soaking your wood in water and never, ever put them in the dishwasher; doing so will strip the wax coating and damage your wood.
FAQ
Is your wax 100% food-safe?
Yes. We use only high-quality, food-grade mineral oil, pure beeswax, and T1-grade carnauba wax.
It is completely non-toxic and safe for surfaces that come into direct contact with food, such as chopping boards, cheese wires, and wooden spoons.
How often should I wax my chopping board?
It depends on how often you use and wash your board. A good rule of thumb is to apply a fresh coat once every 2-3 months. However, if you notice the wood looks dull, feels "fuzzy," or if water stops beading on the surface, it’s time for a quick refresh.
Can I use this wax on furniture or other wooden items?
Absolutely. While it’s designed with kitchenware in mind, so food safety and non toxicity are paramount, our wax is a fantastic finish for any indoor wooden project.
It works beautifully on coffee tables, shelving, and hand-turned bowls, providing a natural, satin lustre and a durable protective layer.
Can I put my chopping board in the dishwasher after waxing?
No. You should never put a wooden chopping board in the dishwasher. The high heat and water pressure will warp the wood and strip away the protective wax finish.
For best results, hand wash with mild soap and warm water, then towel dry.
Why is carnauba wax better than just using beeswax?
Beeswax is a great sealer, but it is fairly soft and has a relatively low melting point. Carnauba wax is the hardest natural wax available and melts at higher temperatures.
By blending the two, we create a finish that is much more resistant to heat and water, meaning your board stays protected for longer and requires less frequent maintenance.
My board is very old and dry. Should I do anything else?
If your wooden board has not been maintained for some time you may wish to take one of two approaches:
Before applying our wax, coat the wood evenly with a generous coat of food-grade mineral oil.
Allow the board to soak up the oil for 24-48 hours, until the surface is fully dry to the touch.
Apply a single, thick coat of wax following the instructions above.
Alternatively if you do not have mineral oil to hand, we would suggest liberally applying a thick coat of wax, allowing it to sit for at least 8 hours, then lightly buff the wax away.
Then proceed to apply a second normal coat of wax as detailed above.
